Where Fort Cavazos Families Actually Live

The short answer

Georgetown, Round Rock, and Liberty Hill come up constantly when Fort Cavazos families are shopping. The commute math is not what people assume. Here is a straight-line comparison of schools, drive times, price per foot, and what kind of buyer each market actually fits.

The commute reality

Fort Cavazos is in Killeen, and Killeen to Georgetown is about 65 miles. On IH-35 in the morning, that can run 90 minutes. Most Fort Cavazos families who choose Georgetown, Round Rock, or Liberty Hill are on flex schedules, teleworking part of the week, or one partner commutes and one doesn't. It is not a daily round trip most people sustain for three years without being intentional about it.

Georgetown

Georgetown is consistently the most requested city among Fort Cavazos families willing to commute. Georgetown ISD is strong and growing. The downtown square has genuine character. New developments in Wolf Ranch, Morningstar, and Rancho Sienna offer modern construction at prices below the Austin core. The commute to Gate 1 at Fort Cavazos is 65 to 75 miles depending on where in Georgetown you are, and IH-35 north of Austin moves faster than through the city.

Round Rock

Round Rock Independent School District consistently ranks among the top in the state. The city has a walkable old town, major employment centers along IH-35 and 130, and significantly more housing inventory than Georgetown. The commute to Fort Cavazos is 70 to 80 miles, and southbound IH-35 through Austin during morning drive is the variable that makes or breaks this choice. For families where one partner works in the Austin corridor, Round Rock's positioning is an advantage.

Liberty Hill

Liberty Hill is the price-per-square-foot story right now. Less established than Georgetown or Round Rock, but the school district has been expanding, new development is significant, and prices per foot trail Georgetown by 10 to 15%. For Fort Cavazos families where one partner is on post and one works remotely or in the Austin corridor, Liberty Hill often delivers the most house for the budget.

If the commute is the constraint, look at Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, and Killeen directly. You sacrifice some school district ranking and amenity density, but you gain 45 minutes of your day back every day you're on post. Over three years, that adds up to roughly 500 hours.

Questions I ask before suggesting a market

  • What are your school requirements? Specific districts narrow the map fast.
  • How often is the commute? Daily vs. 2x per week changes the calculus entirely.
  • Do you plan to keep the property when you PCS? Resale and rental value matter by market.
  • What's your price range? Each market has a different value threshold.
